Nokia 8 vs OnePlus 5: Which Smartphone You Should Buy

Finnish Tech Giant, Nokia has recently launched it's much awaited smartphone Nokia 8 in India while OnePlus launched it's OnePlus 5 way back in June. Both the smartphone comes in under 40K category, so let's compare them to see which one is the best.

Built & Design

Nokia 8 is made up of 6000-series Aluminum unibody which makes it very strong and beautiful and gives very premium look to it while OnePlus is also made of aluminum unibody but Nokia 8 in hand feels more strong and sturdy than OnePlus 5.
Going by the looks both the devices, Nokia 8 and OnePlus 5 have completely distinct looks. They both look premium. Going by their dimensions OnePlus 5 is slimmer at 7.25mm than Nokia 8, measuring 7.90mm. They both weigh nearly same, OnePlus 5 weighs 153g while Nokia 8 weighs 160g.

Display

Nokia 8 has a 5.3 inch IPS LCD Quad HD (2560x1440p) display with Gorilla Glass 5 shield and 2.5D curved glass on the edges. It has a pixel density of approximately 554 Pixels Per Inch. Nokia 8 is splash resistant and has IP54 certification.
While OnePlus 5 houses a 5.5 inch  AMOLED Full HD (1920x1080p) display with Gorilla Glass 5 on the top and 2.5D curve. It has a pixel density of approximately 401 Pixel Per Inch. It doesn't have any IP certification.

Camera

Front camera first, Nokia 8 houses a 13MP shooter which consist of Carl Zeiss optics and LED flash. It also supports 4K video recording. While OnePlus 5 has a 16MP shooter which is limited to only Full HD video recording.
In image department, OnePlus 5 does a better job than Nokia 8 till now but it can be improved via OTA updates on Nokia 8. While in video recording capabilities, Nokia 8 clearly outperforms OnePlus 5.

On the back Nokia 8 boasts dual 13MP cameras with f/2.0 aperture, one is 13MP RGB sensor and other one is 13MP Monochrome sensor. It has Phase Detection Auto  Focus (PDAF) , Laser Autofocus and has dual tone LED flash. It can record videos at 4K resolution. For stabilization, it has Optical Image Stabilization which reduces the shakiness while recording videos.

Here OnePlus 5 also features dual camera setup on the back but it is completely different from Nokia 8. First rear camera is a 16MP wide angle camera with f/1.7 aperture while the other one is a 20MP telephoto camera with f/2.6 aperture and dual LED flash. For stabilization, OnePlus 5 has Electronic Image Stabilization which provides less stability when compared to Optical Image Stabilization.

In this department both the smartphones performs excellently and are neck to neck of each other. But both the camera have some different functions like Nokia 8 can black and white photos due to RGB and Monochrome sensors present in it. While OnePlus 5's rear camera provides you with 2X digital zoom due to the Telephoto lens present in it. In some cases Nokia 8's camera is useful while in other's OnePlus 5's camera is useful.

OS & Processor

Nokia 8 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 octa-core chipset and comes with stock Android Nougat 7.1.1 out of the box. Interestingly, it will be the first non-pixel phone to get the latest Android O update. While OnePlus 5 is again powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 Octacore chipset and comes with customised Oxygen OS v7.1.1.
In this section, both the smartphones are powered by same chipset but in Nokia 8 you will get pure stock Android UI while OnePlus 5 has a customisable UI. In terms of Android updates OnePlus is not the fastest but Nokia has promised to give latest Android updates quickly.

Memory & Battery

Nokia 8 comes with 4GB RAM and 64GB ROM with expandable storage via MicroSD card slot. OnePlus 5 comes in two versions, one is 6GB RAM and 64GB ROM and the other one has 8GB RAM and 128GB ROM. Both the versions of OnePlus 5 doesn't support expandable storage.

Here clearly OnePlus 5 is the winner but in Nokia 8 you get the option of expanding your storage.

In terms of battery, Nokia 8 comes packed with 3090mAh battery while OnePlus 5 has 3300mAh battery.

Here both the devices give nearly same Screen On Time and can easily go on through a day with moderate use.

It also has heart rate monitor and OZO audio, which records 360 degree sound through three microphones. While OnePlus 5 comes with Dash Charge, which is the fastest at charging. No other charging technology is even near to it. And it supports only dual SIM card no MicroSD card.
